A New Paradigm for Evironmental Leadership

The “Inland Empire” region – comprising Riverside and San Bernardino counties – is the fastest- growing area in California and its rapid pace of growth shows no signs of slowing anytime soon. Since 2000, Riverside County has had the fastest- growing population in the state, increasing by approximately 42% to an estimated 2,268,783. San Bernardino County has also grown by approximately 19% since 2000, with an estimated current population of 2,035,210. Together this area is the 12th most populous metropolitan area in the United States

One of the greatest challenges we face is balancing economic growth with environmental protection and quality of life. Decision makers, land managers, municipalities and agencies need to respond to emerging issues with creative solutions that are based on best-available science and research and long-term sustainability. They must incorporate economic, environmental and community perspectives—and integrate different value systems.

The Environmental Leadership Institute (ELI) at California State University San Marcos at Temecula provides a forum for unbiased education, research and policy review – an opportunity to provide innovative and transparent solutions to environmental challenges.  Founded in service, CSUSM continues to be a leader in analyzing and resolving complex community problems and assisting local, regional and international partners.

The ELI is located at the Temecula Higher Education Center (THE Center), a California State University San Marcos at Temecula (CSUSM-T) office within the Temecula Valley Entrepreneurs Exchange (TVE2)., which is an incubator for learning, research and collaboration. The ELI is situated in the heart of the Temecula business park among some of the largest and most innovative companies in the region. In this ideal setting with CSUSM-T, and the City’s Business Incubator and Resource Center, the ELI now provides a living laboratory for students to observe best practices in research, education, planning, policy and analysis as well as partnership cooperation.  It also provides a neutral setting that is conducive to joint problem solving.  At the heart of the Institute is the understanding that there is no single solution to the environmental challenges we face; research and education provide the foundations for balanced and equitable decision making.

The Institute is helping us shape a new paradigm for environmental leadership by providing expert community resources and services for environmental planning, analysis, assessment and policy.  For more information about the Environmental Leadership Institute please visit, http://www.csusm.edu/temecula/certificateprograms/ELI/index.html.

Endless Opportunities

It is February 2016 and we are well into our spring term at California State University San Marcos at Temecula. We are also entering our seventh year in Temecula offering degree completion and professional certificate programs.

We’ve come a long way since opening in January 2009. While 54 prospective nursing students awaited, we celebrated our grand opening at the Paul Goldring Garrett Institute for Higher Learning in downtown Temecula. In September 2010 we relocated to the former Joan Sparkman Elementary School on Margarita Road and in September 2014 we opened a second facility in Temecula in partnership with Mt. San Jacinto College (MSJC) on the 2nd floor of the former Temecula City Hall building.

Now, 332 graduates later, we are contemplating where the next seven years will take us. We continue to see growth for CSUSM at Temecula, MSJC and the entire Southwest Riverside County region. The population projections in the area over the next several years are explosive and we see endless possibilities and opportunities for both students and educational institutions.

I recently found myself in conversation with Brenda Anguiano, one of our soon-to-be graduates in the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration program. Brenda is the owner of Charley’s Grilled Sub at the Temecula Promenade mall. Her story made an impression.

A first generation immigrant from Guatemala, Brenda came to California several  years ago because she realized she would have opportunities here that she could never have at home. But, she could not have imagined in her wildest dreams that she would soon finish a Bachelor’s degree, or own and operate a successful business.

Brenda is the first in her family to attend and graduate from college. So in May her family will come to the U.S. to watch with pride as she takes her place on stage to receive the Bachelor’s degree from President Karen Haynes.

Emotions ran high as she shared this story with me. As a single mom who lives and works in Temecula, CSUSM at Temecula gave her the opportunity to earn a degree while running both a business and a family. It’s a lesson that is resonating through the generations of her family as her own children, nieces and nephews look on.

An interested and committed CSUSM professor of Brenda’s has inspired her to consider applying to a PhD program in strategic management and to open another franchise…..endless opportunities and possibilities continue emerging from CSUSM at Temecula.

Bright Futures

It is final exam week here at California State University San Marcos at Temecula. As you’d expect, there is some stress in the air; much of it related to the typical worries over earning passing grades, and entering the workforce.

I took some time to visit a couple of classes and observe students in the hall and student lounge. These students were happy and confident about the end of the semester and about being able to spend down- time with friends and family.

I also visited one of our classes on entrepreneurship at the Temecula Higher Education Center. I wanted to wish the students good luck on finals and a happy and safe holiday break. Instead I sat and listened while they presented group pitches on fictitious business start-ups they had created. I learned that some of these businesses were under serious consideration by our students.  I heard about everything from organic solar patio covers to wristbands that tell you when to take your meds!

These students blew me away. They are truly bright and engaged.  Given the fact that 85% of CSUSM graduates stay in the region and contribute to regional economic growth I know that some of these students will be looking to launch careers-in our community in the next few weeks. I hope you will consider hiring them for your business…..

If you do hire one of our graduates from business, nursing or kinesiology, let us know. We want to stay engaged with them and with you. Knowing what we are doing right and what we can do better will keep our programs vibrant and relevant.

We look forward to seeing the positive economic impact that our students will have right here in the Temecula Valley!

Students Who Are “Inspired”

When the fall term began back in August, I started to think about how we at California State University San Marcos at Temecula (CSUSM-T) inspire our students to succeed in their studies, and be all they can be. The Oxford dictionary defines inspiration as the ability to fill someone with the urge or ability to do something special or creative.

How is it, that a group of recent graduates from CSUSM-T were inspired to set up a routine brainstorming session to discuss business start-up ideas?  Amanda Maggio, a 2015 graduate of the Business Administration (BSBA) degree program and our new student services assistant explained that five graduates from the BSBA program get together every few weeks to discuss ideas for possible business ventures, hoping that the next great business idea will be borne from these gatherings. They work on concepts between meetings and make their meetings very intentional.

“We are confident that the skills and concepts we learned at CSUSM-T prepared us for both business ownership and employment,” she says. The group recently held a focus group to test out one of their best ideas and the team believes the concept has real potential.

According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), the characteristics and skills successful entrepreneurs need to have include  understanding and comfort with taking risks, ability to the think on your feet, ability to make decisions alone not knowing whether they are right or not, persuasiveness, creativity and the ability to negotiate. These skills are all incorporated into CSUSM-T’s BSBA program.

So, how does CSUSM-T inspire our students to succeed? Though I am not entirely sure of the answer, I do know that when our student cohorts’ work in teams to address issues and problem- solve together, they instill in themselves the confidence to succeed regardless of their goals.

And I am proud that Amanda’s group is doing just that.

Associate Dean’s Blog

The first time I heard the word, “kinesiology”, was when my college roommate told me that it was her major. She was a dancer and very athletic. Now she is a high school P.E. and English teacher. I won’t tell you how long she has been teaching and coaching, but I remember envying her as she wore tights and ballet slippers to class!

These days there is a special camaraderie among kinesiology and nursing students at the Cal State San Marcos at Temecula campus whether they are in nursing uniforms, jeans, gym shorts or sweat shirts. They are part of a cohort or group of students who attend every class together throughout their two years with us. They form study groups and build tight support networks. They are among the lucky ones.  We have a 95% graduation rate. Students graduate on time and on budget!

Bachelor of Science in kinesiology students at CSUSM at Temecula know their graduation date from the moment they enter the program; they have guaranteed seats in their classes and locked tuition from the date of entry to date of graduation.

They look forward to careers as athletic trainers, cardiac rehabilitation specialists, school or college coaches, directors of youth campus/sport programs, exercise physiologists, fitness instructors, medical doctors, occupational therapists, personal trainers, physical education teachers, physical therapists, physician’s assistants, recreational therapists, registered nurses, respiration therapists, sport management and strength and conditioning coaches and other related health care careers.

CSUSM at Temecula accepts applications throughout the year. If you are interested in learning more about the kinesiology program visit our website at www.csusm.edu/kine. Request more information and you will receive a code to waive the application fee.

Hope to see you at CSUSM at Temecula!
